Recalls
Recently the FDA has been alerting of dog food recalls for concerns because of potential pentobarbital contamination and of possible Salmonella contamination.
You’ll want to pay close attention to these recalls for your family’s safety – people and pets.
Independent tests found low levels of pentobarbital (used to euthanize animals) in samples of Gravy Train canned dog food, manufactured by Smuckers. The FDA said the level is “unlikely to pose a health risk for pets.”
However, any level of pentobarbital in pet food is a violation of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. An investigation is underway.
Smuckers provided a list of 27 dog food products to food safety news although the FDA list has only 18 in their list. Smuckers has begun a business-to-business removal of certain products.
The FDA lists the products to not feed your pet original from 2016 through today. It is not clear what specific products are included so I recommend you research your dog food and lot number and do not feed to your pets if on the recall. If you have been feeding recalled food and your pet is ill, seek veterinary care immediately.
Included brand names of Kibbles ‘N Bits, Skippy, Ol’ Roy, and Gravy Train.
Two additional pet food recalls are:
Carnivore Meat Company’s “Vital Essentials” and TruDog “Treat Me Crunchy Beef Delight”.Both of these recalls resulted from tests indicating Salmonella contamination. The potential hazard is for humans and pets.
Use Care
Do take care when feeding your pet to use proper hand washing and area cleaning as preventative measures against disease. This includes treats as well.
Make Better Choices
I encourage feeding your pet human grade food. Your pets of course prefer fresh, unprocessed foods and enjoy much better health for it. Some people think it is more expensive however we are finding a healthy dog with a great diet saves money over the long run. Many regular pet procedures are not needed and result in significant savings.
I’m happy to find more people crossing over and loving how their pets respond enthusiastically to the new diet and quickly show marked health improvements. We will be offering more information on this in the near future so stay tuned.
